Puppy Crying at Night: A Bengaluru Survival Guide for Week One

The first night with a new puppy is almost always the hardest, and in a Bengaluru apartment with shared walls it can feel like an emergency. Your puppy has just left their mother and littermates and is sleeping alone for the very first time in their life. Crying is communication, not defiance.

Start by moving your puppy closer, not further away. The most common mistake is putting the crate in a separate room or on the balcony on night one. Keep the crate or bed beside your own bed for the first week. Your breathing and smell do most of the settling work for you.

Get the bedtime routine boring. A calm sniff walk or indoor sniff game, dinner well before bed, water available, then a final potty break with no talking or play. Excitement in the last thirty minutes before bed almost guarantees a rough night.

Expect a night toilet trip. Under 12 weeks, most puppies cannot hold their bladder through a full night. Set an alarm around 3 to 4 am and take your puppy out before they cry. Keep the light low, do not chat, and go straight back to bed after.

Learn the difference between two cries. A short whinge that fades in a couple of minutes is settling. Escalating, frantic crying with scrabbling is distress or a full bladder, and it needs a calm response. Letting a puppy panic for hours does not build independence, it builds fear of being alone, which later shows up as separation anxiety.

    Do vs Don't

What settles a crying puppy and what keeps them awake

    Do this
    • Keep the crate next to your bed for the first week
    • Take a quiet 3 to 4 am potty break before the crying starts
    • Answer escalating, frantic crying calmly
    • Keep the sleeping spot warm, dim and away from fans
    Avoid this
    • Shut the puppy alone in another room on night one
    • Play, talk or feed during night-time toilet trips
    • Let a distressed puppy cry for hours to 'teach independence'
    • Place the crate under a fan or on a cold bare floor

Temperature and noise matter in Bengaluru. Fans directly over a crate, cold marble floors in winter mornings, and 6 am building work all wake puppies early. A folded blanket, a spot away from the vent, and blackout curtains fix more night waking than any training technique.

About neighbours. If you live in a flat, tell the immediate neighbours you have a new puppy and that it will settle in a week or two. Most people are far more patient when they are told in advance rather than woken up unprepared.

Move the crate slowly. Once your puppy sleeps calmly for several nights, shift the crate a metre at a time towards its final spot over a week or so. Fast moves usually restart the crying.

How long does it take? Most puppies stop crying at night within 5 to 10 nights, and most sleep through by 12 to 16 weeks. If your puppy is still panicking at night after three weeks, or cannot be left alone in the day either, get help early rather than waiting it out.

My crate training guide pairs well with this, and the puppy foundation programme includes a night routine built for your flat and your schedule.
