How to Choose Between a Rs 1,200 Training Package and Others: An Honest Bengaluru Guide

Bengaluru pet parents now have dozens of training packages to choose from, ranging from Rs 600 single sessions to Rs 80,000 board-and-train programs. The pricing seems random because, honestly, it often is. Here's how to read past the number and figure out what you're actually buying.

Why headline price tells you almost nothing. A Rs 1,200 session can mean: a 30-minute group class with one trainer for 8 dogs, OR a 90-minute private in-home assessment with a senior trainer who's worked with 200 dogs. Same price, vastly different value. The same applies at the high end, a Rs 60,000 board-and-train can be brilliant, or a kennel where your dog sits in a cage being shocked into compliance.

The 6 questions that decode any package. 1) How many in-person hours do I actually get? 2) Who specifically conducts the sessions, and what's their experience? 3) Is it private or group? 4) What's included between sessions, WhatsApp support, written homework, video reviews? 5) What happens if it doesn't work, money-back, free top-ups, or nothing? 6) What's the actual training method? The answers separate good packages from bad ones in 5 minutes.

What good single sessions (Rs 1,000 to 2,500) include. 60 to 90 minutes one-on-one. Senior trainer (not an apprentice). Written assessment after. One concrete homework plan. WhatsApp follow-up for a week. If you're paying Rs 1,200 for 30 minutes with a junior trainer and no follow-up, you're paying too much.

What a fair multi-week package looks like (Rs 18,000 to 45,000). 6 to 12 in-person sessions of 60 to 90 minutes. Same lead trainer throughout (no rotating juniors). Clear written curriculum and milestones. WhatsApp support 5 days a week. Optional graduation session at the end. Force-free methods only. Honest expectations: "this won't be perfect at the end, but you'll have the foundation and the system."

Real story, pet parent of Pepper, a 1.5-year-old Cocker Spaniel in Sarjapur Road. The family had two quotes for separation anxiety work, Rs 12,000 for "5 sessions of behaviour modification" from a trainer with 8 months of experience, and Rs 38,000 for "10 sessions plus daily WhatsApp coaching" from a behaviourist with 6 years of separation cases. They picked the cheaper one. After 5 sessions Pepper was actually worse, the trainer had used flooding (long forced absences) instead of gradual exposure. They started over with the more experienced behaviourist and resolved it in 12 weeks. Total cost: Rs 50,000 instead of Rs 38,000. Cheap can be expensive.

When a board-and-train is worth Rs 50,000+. Specific scenarios: high-anxiety dogs whose home environment is part of the problem, family members who genuinely cannot dedicate practice time, urgent timelines (relocation, baby on the way) where home training won't fit. Even then, only with a kennel that lets you visit unannounced, uses force-free methods, and includes 4+ in-home transition sessions after pick-up. Read my honest boarding vs sessions vs classes comparison before committing.

Red flags in any quoted package. Refuses to break down what's actually included. Promises a "trained" dog by a fixed date. Mentions e-collars, prong collars, or "corrections." Won't share methods until you pay. Pushes a tier upgrade you didn't ask about. Has no money-back or top-up clause. Bills only in advance, no instalments, even when the package costs Rs 40,000+.

Green flags worth paying more for. Senior trainer assigned to your case (named on the proposal). Free 15-minute discovery call. Detailed written assessment after session 1. Clear homework after every session. WhatsApp support during business hours, with a defined response time. Free tune-up session 3 months after the program ends. Real client references in your area.

How to compare two quotes side by side. Make a 6-row table: hours, trainer experience, format (private/group), inter-session support, what happens if it fails, methods. Don't compare price until the table is filled in. Often a Rs 25,000 package and a Rs 50,000 package look very different on paper but the cheaper one has hidden costs (top-up sessions, no support, junior trainer). Compare the package, not the headline.

Match the package to the actual problem. Mild manners issues (jumping, basic obedience), 4 to 6 sessions. Reactivity, leash aggression, fear, 8 to 12 sessions over 3 months. Severe behaviour cases (separation anxiety, resource guarding, biting), 12 to 20 sessions over 4 to 6 months. Don't buy a 4-session puppy package for a reactive 2-year-old. Don't buy a 16-session program for a polite Lab who just needs leash work. Honest trainers will tell you which tier you actually need before they sell.

Where Paws of Persistence sits. My packages are designed by problem, not by a fixed session count. I do honest 15-minute discovery calls, send written proposals, name myself in the contract, and include WhatsApp support and a free 90-day tune-up on every full program. See the breakdown on my services and packages page, and ask me to walk through the right tier for your dog.

Final word. Comparing dog training packages is exactly like comparing schools or doctors, the headline price is the smallest part of the picture. Spend 30 minutes asking the right questions before you spend 30,000 rupees, and you'll save yourself months of regret.
